WOMEN’S RESOURCE  RIGHTS

KADDRO is a local Non-governmental organization based in Kambia whose vision is that the vulnerable women, children and youth have equal opportunities in a just world. In order to achieve the aforementioned vision, KADDRO has over the years focused its interventions on food production by providing agricultural support to vulnerable groups (i.e. the poor and marginalized rural women).
Towards achieving its vision, KADDRO with support from Misereor through Trocaire Ireland is implementing a Women’s Empowerment (WEE) Project. This project aims to economically empower women through the provision of livelihood support to vulnerable rural women in Kambia District. Providing agricultural support to the aforementioned group will be a fruitless endeavor if the main medium (i.e. land) where agriculture is practiced is either not available or in short supply to these groups. During the course of the implementation of this project, KADDRO has noticed that most of the women in the communities were this project is been implemented are deprived of their basic land rights (i.e. inheritance right, usage right, control right, etc.).
To mitigate the effects of women’s land right deprivation, KADDRO has over the years integrated awareness raising on women’s land right as a component in the WEE Project.

FOCUS
The main objective for integrating women’s land right awareness raising in the WEE project is to raise the awareness of the project beneficiaries and community stakeholders on the effects of women’s land right deprivation and the benefits of protecting women’s land rights at community level.

STRATEGIES
The strategies used by KADDRO to achieve the aforementioned are;

RESEARCH ON WOMEN’S LAND RIGHTS
In order to get first-hand information on the level of women’s land right deprivation in the communities were the project is being implemented, the causes of women’s land right deprivation and how to mitigate the effects of women’s land right deprivation, KADDRO has during the cause of the implementation of the WEE project done surveys, personal interviews, community engagements . Data obtained during the cause of the research has been utilized by KADDRO staff to inform their approach towards addressing women’s land right deprivation.
WOMEN’S LAND RIGHT SENSITIZATION AT COMMUNITY LEVEL
KADDRO has also engaged the project participants of the 32 beneficiary communities of the WEE project on women’s land right deprivations. The rationale for this is to raise the awareness of project participants on the level of women’s land right deprivation in their communities, the effects of these deprivations and they (project participants ) proffering solutions to mitigate the effects of women’s land rights deprivation at community level

CHIEFDOM LEVEL DIALOGUE FORUM ON WOMEN’S LAND RIGHT
KADDRO sees the chiefdom stakeholders to be very crucial in the achievement of a secured women’s land right at community level. This is because; the chiefdom stakeholders are the key decision makers when it comes to land issues at community level. Towards achieving this, KADDRO has engaged different stakeholders in 5 chiefdoms in Kambia district on Women’s land right deprivation. The purpose of these engagements is to bring to the attention of the various chiefdom stakeholders the level of land right deprivation in their chiefdoms, the effects of these deprivations and dialogue solutions to mitigate the deprivations and bring out points for necessary actions.
FOLLOW UP MEETINGS WITH CHIEFDOM STAKEHOLDERS ON WOMEN’S LAND RIGHT
In order to get first-hand information on the actions taken by different stakeholders to mitigate the effects of women’s land right deprivation, KADDRO after the chiefdom level dialogue forum made a follow up with the stakeholders of the 5 chiefdoms were the chiefdom level dialogue forum was done.

MEETING WITH CORE STAFF OF KAMBIA DISTRICT COUNCIL
Kambia District Council being the highest governance structure in Kambia district as per the Local Government Act of 2002, KADDRO thought it fit to engage the core staff of the Kambia District Council on women’s land right deprivation in Kambia District Council. The essence of this engagement is to provide the council with first-hand information on the level of women’s land right deprivation in Kambia district, causes of these land right deprivation and actions to be taken to mitigate the effects of women’s land right deprivation.
